Accelerate Membrane Development for Urban Sewage Purification

The Technische Universität Berlin, with some 30,000 students, is one of the largest German Universities of Technology. Within its "Centre for Water in Urban Areas", TUB is merging its competence in water research across five faculties and 22 departments. The two participating Departments have approx. a decade of experience in MBR.

AMEDEUS involves two Departments from the "Centre for Water in Urban Areas", namely Chemical Engineering (DCE) and Water Quality Control (DWQC). Both departments have been jointly active in membrane (bioreactor) research for years and have specifically investigated the interaction of organic water constituents with low pressure membranes in drinking water production and wastewater treament in several PhD theses. With a staff of 15 scientists the DCE focuses on modeling of biokinetics and filtration mechanisms and on process optimisation of wastewater treatment systems, whereas the DWQC with its 18 scientists is more experienced in chemical analysis and potable reuse applications. Under the roof of water recycling for industry and municipalities both Departments are merging their capacities and synergistically support each other.
